A fire that started at a recycling plant in Sherburn-in-Elmet looks like it will be burning for days, according to North Yorkshire’s fire chief.

The Newgen Recycling plant caught fire at around 8:40am on January 16th. The plant holds 15,000 tons of tyres, and these have caused the blaze to keep burning for days.

Firefighters have been tackling flames as tall as 30 feet. The plume of smoke caused by the fire has reached 6,000 feet high, and can be seen from space.

Nigel Hutchinson, fire chief at North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, said: “It is a significant fire and one that is difficult to tackle. It's the sort of incident that will go on for days.”

It is unknown what caused the fire, but it serves as a strong warning for employers to take every precaution to keep their workplace safe, whether that be sprinkler systems or fire signs.ADNFCR-2754-ID-801683336-ADNFCR
