Aberystwyth company safety failures lead to asbestos exposure

Dangerous safety failings by a plumbing company may have caused two workers to be exposed to asbestos fibres during a refurbishment project on flats in Aberystwyth.

Two workers, a site manager and a subcontractor were not given information relating to the presence of the substance while they worked on the flats in the Peparcau area between November 2010 and February 2011 for Superior Plumbing Installations.

As a result, Superior Plumbing Installations appeared before Aberystwyth Magistrates and pleaded guilty to a breach of Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and was fined £5,000 and ordered to pay £3,830 in costs.

HSE inspector Phil Nicolle said: "Superior Plumbing's failure to follow advice, guidance and their own procedures to identify the presence of asbestos and plan for its safe removal has needlessly created a serious long term risk to workers' health."

In recent months, the HSE warned farmers of the importance of protecting their wellbeing while machinery was used at work.ADNFCR-2754-ID-801506020-ADNFCR
