Asbestos-related offences land firm with fine

A development firm from the south-west has been punished for asbestos-related offences, it has been confirmed.
Norwegian Homes demolished Cellar Cover Hotel at Droskyn Point in Perranporth in July 2006 ahead of its conversion into guesthouses and holiday apartments.
However, an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found asbestos-containing insulation boards under a caravan, in polythene sacks and in bonfire ashes.
Truro Magistrates' Court heard the Cornwall-based company had not implemented the necessary procedures - such as safety signs - to protect its workers from the fibres.
The firm pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 15 of the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2002 and was fined £4,500 and ordered to pay £11,959 in costs.
"Norwegian Homes should have carried out a survey for the presence and quantity of asbestos in the building, prior to demolition," said HSE inspector Martin Lee.
"This incident was entirely preventable and the clean-up costs far outstripped the costs of a survey and safe removal of the asbestos material."
Last month, Savoir Developments was also fined after admitting to breaching Regulations 5 and 16 of the Control and Asbestos Regulations 2006.
