Motorists have removed safety barriers in order to ford that was closed in April.

Speaking to the BBC, Hampshire County Council noted that drivers crossing on the Hampshire/Berkshire border were potentially putting themselves in danger.

The authority announced plans to fit larger barriers in order to stop them being moved.

Road safety was recently addressed by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), which has called for papers prior to its Road Safety Seminar next year.

The exhibition will analyse the potential of new and emerging methods to provide road safety initiatives, exploring potential channels such as social media.

"We recognise that the closure will cause some people inconvenience by having to drive around the traffic diversion routes, but it is important to maintain the safety of the travelling public," the council explained.

The authority admitted that, while the barriers are regularly inspected, it is impossible for them to be monitored 24 hours a day in order to stop them being repositioned.ADNFCR-2754-ID-801467512-ADNFCR
