Businesses can stop accidents from happening by simply taking basic steps, one expert has advised.

In a statement that may provoke companies to invest in safety signage, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (Iosh) has recommended companies to embed a safety culture within their organisation.

Jill Joyce, senior policy and technical advisor at Iosh, explained: "It is when a safety culture is successfully instilled in a business that long-term improvements will start to be seen."

This culture can be integrated into a business through training and instruction, while good housekeeping techniques and reporting skills can be used to minimise the level of risk in a workplace, Ms Joyce noted.

The parcel delivery company Yodel has collected a gold achievement award from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.

It has introduced a number of measures that have helped to lower the company's three-day injuries by more than 41 per cent in a year.ADNFCR-2754-ID-800695073-ADNFCR
