Companies advised to use health and safety consultants

Businesses should look at hiring a health and safety consultant to offer assistance with risk issues in the workplace, one organisation has advised.

Specialists who have knowledge of measures such as safety signs can provide help with investigations, reviews, audits and assist in developing training programmes, according to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.

Roger Bibbings, occupational safety adviser at the group, said: "Employers need to own their systems and procedures and they need to have an action plan.

"They may need [an] outside [perspective] to help them understand where they are now and what they need to do next."

However, Mr Bibbings warned businesses against hiring a consultant to "contract out" their management of health and safety.

Last month, a survey of almost 6,000 employers by the British Chambers of Commerce found that 47 per cent of companies perceive health and safety regulations as a burden. ADNFCR-2754-ID-800569867-ADNFCR
