Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service has been given a new award after reducing the number of injuries to its firefighters and other staff by 40 per cent in three years.

It was presented with the Diamond accolade from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) after staff injuries fell from 2016 during 2009/10 to 136 in 2011/12, while casualties dropped by 80 (37 per cent).

Lee Howell, chief fire officer of Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service, said: "We are particularly proud of the 37 per cent reduction in injuries achieved since the programme began. The service is committed to a Zero Harm initiative and receiving the highest score level on RoSPA’s Quality Safety Audit is an excellent milestone on this path."

Health and safety is a key issue for all organisations, but it is particularly under the spotlight at the moment due to the recent hazardous weather, which can easily put workers in danger.ADNFCR-2754-ID-801527953-ADNFCR
