Workers who operate in noisy surroundings should ensure that they are equipped with appropriate ear protection, a specialist has highlighted.
The human ear is extremely sensitive and can suffer permanent damage if it is not given sufficient time to recover from exposure to excessively loud noise, a specialist from Deafness Research UK has warned.
As a result of these risks, some firms may want to introduce warning signs if their workers are exposed to high volumes of sound.
Vivienne Michael, chief executive of Deafness Research UK, said: "There is a growing amount of evidence that over-exposure to excessive loud noise, whether in the workplace or leisure activities, is a direct cause of both tinnitus and noise-induced hearing loss."
The importance of protecting ears was recently underlined by new research from the University of Michigan Health System, which found that over-exposure to loud noise can cause lasting damage that could lead to tinnitus.
