Work-related road traffic accidents should be reported by employers in order to reduce the number of deaths and injuries among those travelling to work.
This is according to the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), which wants the government to include such incidents in the national accident reporting system.
Richard Jones, head of policy and public affairs at IOSH, stressed that employers have clear duties to manage work-related health and safety risks.
The organisation's comments come after it awarded Dublin worker Peter Start with its person of the year accolade after he set up a course to teach young professionals about protecting their welfare at work.
"Employers who do not ensure employees can drive safely for work are as much at fault as those who don’t ensure employees can use workplace machinery safely," Mr Jones went on to say.
He explained employers should manage their risks through good planning and by implementing sensible and proportionate precautions.
