Firms can benefit from hiring an external health and safety expert, one specialist has advised.

Jane White, research and information services manager at the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, underlined that companies should adopt effective health and safety measures to ensure they abide by the law and build a good reputation.

Ms White recommended that, for companies which cannot afford an in-house advisor, an external health and safety consultant can be helpful.

"Even if you have someone in-house, you are still going to want at times that external influence. It is that fresh pair of eyes over your business," she added.

It is also advisable for firms to bring in specific personnel to check issues such as asbestos or fire regulations, Ms White noted.

In recent months, Roger Bibbings, occupational safety advisor at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), underlined that companies should be better equipped when it comes to enforcing health and safety standards.ADNFCR-2754-ID-801359004-ADNFCR
