People should be wary of electrical failures, which could lead to the introduction of warning signs in properties.
As part of Electrical Fire Safety Week, West Sussex Fire & Rescue has warned individuals that electrical equipment is an often overlooked hazard, according to the Littlehampton Gazette.
Community risk reduction manager for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, Kathy Burke, told the newspaper: "The truth is most fires are preventable. It’s so easy to think it’s not going to happen to you, but people really can’t afford to be complacent where electrical safety is concerned."
Ms Burke advised people to look for warning signs that indicate a potential fire, such as flickering lights or scorch marks.
Last month, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents stressed that companies should be better at enforcing health and safety standards.
In order to improve, firms must implement measures in a risk-assessed manner, the group believes.
