Five-figure fine for wood processing plant boss

The boss of a Penrith wood processing plant has been hit with a five-figure fine after one of his employees suffered serious injuries in an incident involving a log shavings machine.
A 24-year-old employee of AW Jenkinson Forest Products was using a chainsaw to remove a trapped log in a box at the end of the machine's conveyor when he lost his balance.
Penrith Magistrates' Court heard that his right foot became caught in 48 revolving blades at the bottom of the log box and was subsequently completely severed.
Company owner Allan Wilson Jenkinson was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and received a fine of £20,000, while also being ordered to pay costs of £6,146.
Faye Wingfield, the investigating HSE inspector, explained that the incident - which occurred on June 25th 2009 - underlines the importance of safety measures such as warning signs.
She said: "Employers who operate machinery are required to identify the risks associated with its use and establish what needs to be put in place so that work can be carried out safely.
"Safe systems of work should be devised and implemented, including the provision of appropriate worker training, supervision and personal protective equipment."
Meanwhile, Essex-based firm Blue Flag Hand Car Wash was recently fined after the HSE discovered it did not possess a current Employers' Liability Compulsory Insurance certificate.
