A recent fine charged to Shell UK Limited has triggered a warning to gas specialists, who have been told that they are operating in a high-risk industry.

The charge may also illuminate the importance of efficient safety signage.

Ipswich Crown Court has ordered the energy firm to pay £1.24 million in fines and costs relating to an explosion and fire in 2008, which took place at its Bacton gas terminal in Norfolk.

The company was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive and Environment Agency.

Environment Agency environment manager for Norfolk and Suffolk Marcus Sibley said: "We are disappointed that a company such as Shell with its experience in the fuel industry should have operated in this fashion.

"This is a high-risk industry and that is why we expect high standards."

The HSE recently warned recycling firms that they must take health and safety seriously in the workplace in an appeal that came after a man was injured while working for Environcom England Ltd. ADNFCR-2754-ID-800587871-ADNFCR
