The mother of a man who suffered a fatal accident in a chimney fire has called for the coalition to not make funding cuts to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Experts at the organisation investigate companies to ensure that the adequate safety signage is in place, and Linda Whelan from County Durham has highlighted the importance of its efforts, reports the Northern Echo.
Mrs Whelan told the newspaper: "Critics say health and safety has gone mad and that it's a burden on businesses.
"I think a much bigger burden is when a business loses an employee through injury, illness or even death, which could have been avoided."
Ms Whelan's son Craig was killed by a fireball in an industrial chimney after the steel cables of their hoist melted.
The HSE recently underlined the importance of gas safety by stating that all landlords must have a valid gas safety certificate.
