A safety course for equestrian firms, which may have included information on health and safety signage, was held at a college in St Albans last week.

Over 30 representatives from companies throughout Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire attended the free course, organised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and authorities from both regions.

A range of seminars and tutorials dealing with issues such as hazard-awareness, heavy lifting and driving all-terrain vehicles were on offer.

The event was tailored to be specific to the equine industry.

Penny Leede, inspector for the HSE, said: "Handling and riding horses is a satisfying and enjoyable experience, however it is important to stay safe around horses to avoid unnecessary accidents or injuries."

Ms Leede also said that it was important preventative measures and useful advice were delivered to the businesses.

HSE figures show that between 1st April 2009 and 31st March this year, 38 agricultural workers were killed while at work.ADNFCR-2754-ID-800067556-ADNFCR
