HSE launches three-week inspection on Sunderland firms

Industrial estates in Sunderland will be inspected over the coming weeks, with officials checking they have suitable health and safety signs and procedures in place.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has joined with Sunderland City Council in the scheme, which aims to improve standards on work sites around the area.
A team of inspectors will visit different businesses over a three-week period, focussing on how risks relating to asbestos, working at height and workplace transport are being managed.
The HSE added that, if the correct practices are not in place, including having the right health and safety signs, enforcement action will be taken.
Keith Anderson, principal environmental health officer at Sunderland City Council, said: "We'll be looking to ensure that companies are taking the necessary steps to identify and minimise the risks to help ensure a safer workplace for all."
The inspections follow health and safety figures released by the HSE which showed that the north-east is not performing as well as other areas of the country, seeing an increase in workplace deaths in 2008-09 when compared to the previous year.
