HSE warns farmers about health and safety

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned farmers about the importance of protecting their wellbeing while using machinery at work.

It stressed how a Shropshire man was tragically killed when trying to operate a faulty bale wrapping machine and urged businesses to ensure all of their products come with effective safety features.

A lack of witnesses mean the HSE is uncertain about what happened, but an investigation discovered that a piece of the equipment's safety trip bar had not been engineered to stop the rotating bailing arms in sufficient time.

There is help available for those who want help in order to make their working environment safer, as farmers across the UK have recently been taking part in safety and health awareness days, with the first five of these recording high attendances.

HSE inspector David Kivlin said: "Manufacturers of farm equipment should ensure that they design such equipment so that safety risks are reduced as far as possible for anyone who enters the danger zone of the rotating arms."ADNFCR-2754-ID-801501805-ADNFCR
