The risk of using out of date or dilapidated safety signs has been highlighted today after the Health and Safety Executive's (HSE) announcement of an inspection scheme taking place on the UK's many offshore oil rigs.
The HSE is concerned that the rigs' infrastructures, after years of use, are posing a risk to safety.
After 40 years of oil and gas production, over half of fixed platforms have passed or will soon reach their original lifespan.
The scheme, the Ageing & Life Extension Inspection Programme, will operate with HSE inspectors visiting platforms to check safety plans in place. The idea is not to shut them down but to better equip them for production in the foreseeable future.
Steve Walker, head of offshore safety at the HSE, said during a launch of the programme that it was a "priority" to "look to the future and anticipate inevitable consequences".
Mr Walker said: "Ageing offshore installations run the risk of deterioration, which can have serious consequences for installation and asset integrity. This is not acceptable. The safety of 28,000 workers is dependent on systems and structures being in good working now and in the future."
According to the Daily Telegraph, the announcement is being mirrored by a similar scheme due to take place in the US.
