Kent firm fined after safety failings led to fall
20th December 2013 | Health and Safety Signs
A company has been prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after one of its employees fell through a garage roof.
The worker fractured his shoulder, lost his peripheral vision and was left partially deaf after he fell a distance of almost three metres, landing on a concrete floor.
He was repairing a corrugated iron garage roof at the time. The fragile metal broke underneath him as he was clearing moss and debris from the roof.
The HSE found that the employee had not been provided with adequate safety equipment, such as a harness, and no risk assessment had not been carried out.
Platinum Property Maintenance Ltd, of Kent, pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. It was fined £8,000 and ordered to pay £6,000 in costs.
