Lewisham butchery firm taken to court for equipment failures

A large butchery firm in Lewisham has been fined after safety failings caused an employee to injure his forearm.

The safety gloves offered by Rare Butchers provided unsatisfactory support to the worker, while the firm also failed to report the serious incident at its Chiltonian Industrial Estate premises in July 2011.

After the hearing HSE Inspector David Balfour said: “The deep, painful cut the butcher sustained was entirely preventable had he been wearing elbow- length chain mail gloves, which should have been provided by the company as a matter of course.

“Mr Balfour warned that working with knives poses clear risks to businesses, though more needed to be done to mitigate risks.

Rare Butchers of Distinction Ltd pleaded guilty to single breaches of the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 and the Reporting of Injuries Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Act 1995ADNFCR-2754-ID-801582440-ADNFCR
