MP backs use of health and safety signs

22nd February 2010 | Health and Safety Signs

An MP has backed the use of health and safety signs and other workplace precautions in order to better protect the country's staff.

Bob Russell, Liberal Democrat MP for Colchester, has tabled a motion in support of the Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH's) Creating a Healthier UK plc campaign and said 25 MPs have been keen to sign up already.

The initiative urges UK businesses to be more aware of potential hazards in the workplace and take the measures to deal with them, such as using health and safety signs.

"There's too much alleged health and safety madness in our society - raising people's knowledge of risk, and helping them to better manage it, will, I hope, help people get on with what they want to do in a safe way," Mr Russell explained.

Recently, Richard Jones, policy and technical director at IOSH, said that one way of making the nation's workplace safer would be to impose tougher sentences for companies found guilty of corporate manslaughter after failing to erect warning signs to protect employees.
