Those who might be looking for guidance on where they need to best place health and safety signage in their workplaces and organisations to accord with the law now have access to a new online directory of specialist consultants.
More than 1,700 highly qualified consultants in the UK have signed up to the web-based Occupational Safety and Health Consultants Register (OSHCR), which aims to help businesses find a health and safety consultant they can trust should they need to seek external help.
The register has been set up by a number of professional bodies, including the British Safety Council, Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. It is being supported and administered by the Health and Safety Executive.
Consultants wanting to join the register must meet strident eligibility criteria – each must belong to a professional body, be educated to degree level, have at least two years' experience and show a demonstrable commitment to their professional development.
The initiative comes on the back of the government-commissioned Common Sense Common Safety report into Britain's health and safety system, which called for improved competence in health and safety advice.
Commenting on the register, employment minister Chris Grayling said: "We have launched an official OSHCR for those health and safety practitioners who are properly accredited to one of the professional bodies in the industry.
"Those who do not have the requisite expertise and experience will be excluded from the register, making it easier for employers to access reliable, reputable advice."
The register is at www.oshcr.org. Users can browse the full list of consultants, or search by keyword, topic, location or industry.
