The minister in charge of Britain's railway performance has commended the industry's commitment to safety across the UK's train industry.

MP Norman Baker, parliamentary under-secretary of state for transport, praised professionals at the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health's Rail Industry Conference, which has now been recognising measures such as safety signage installations for seven years.

Mr Baker said: "We are one of the safest railways in Europe, and that's a tribute to people in the industry who have striven hard, to ensure that the railways are safe."

He went on to say that people now no longer question if the railways are safe because rail safety performance has increased significantly over recent years.

It follows the government's announcement that it is planning a major cut back on health and safety red tape.

As part of the plans, a challenge panel will be in action from January 1st, enabling firms to have the decisions of health and safety inspectors overturned if they are proven incorrect.ADNFCR-2754-ID-801225374-ADNFCR
