Road sign clear-up welcomed in York

Action to clear York's streets of clutter and needless safety signage has been boosted by new government proposals, one man believes.
Councillor Dave Merett, cabinet member for city strategy at City of York Council, has claimed that the coalition's new plans provide more freedom for authorities to make decisions regarding traffic signals and local signs, reports the Gazette & Herald.
Speaking to the newspaper, Mr Merett said: "The new policy will really enable York to go further on this by removing the requirements for some unnecessary signing and giving authorities the control to place traffic signs only where they are needed."
As a result of the proposals, City of York Council will be provided with more flexibility, Mr Merett explained.
This month, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents' (RoSPA) Health and Safety Forum will focus on how to resolve challenges relating to health and safety.
Speakers from firms such as Scottish Power, Cemex and Unite will be on hand for the event.
