The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has issued a safety message ahead of the Diwali celebrations today (November 13th)
As part of the festivities, homes and businesses are adorned with special oil lamps and candles, while fireworks are also set off, but RoSPA has warned that candles are a major cause of house fires throughout the UK.
Sheila Merrill, RoSPA’s public health adviser, said: "As this is the festival of lights, many candles, oil lamps and fireworks will be used, so please take note of advice to prevent fires and injuries, particularly in the home.Candles should always be used in proper holders or secure containers as tealights can easily burn through a surface."
The organisation is also aiming to improve the safety of road users, as it recently issued a call for papers ahead of its Road Safety Seminar 2013, which will look at new and emerging methods to lower accidents among drivers.
