The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has advised safety professionals to join forces with the business community.

It hopes such a move will boost accident prevention measures, decrease NHS costs and help to deliver Britain's public health targets, which were addressed in RoSPA's sixth Allan St John Holt Memorial Lecture at the Crowne Plaza NEC in Birmingham.

Tom Mullarkey, chief executive of RoSPA, said: "We see that health and safety is besieged on all sides by critics who cannot, or will not, engage with these serious issues and instead seek to deride this vital contribution to society; so it is time to come out fighting."

Mr Mullarkey said that he knew the huge problems of accidental injury and ill-health were growing globally.

He explained that health and safety professionals need to reinvent their image by educating communities on how to keep people safe and healthy.ADNFCR-2754-ID-801654062-ADNFCR
