Safety sign stolen from Somerset black-spot

The danger of missing warning signs has been highlighted after the theft of a safety sign in Somerset.

According to the BBC, a road sign has been stolen from a well-known incident spot in Burrington Combe, north Somerset.

The sign, which will cost around Ã‚Â£7,000 to replace, was stolen from a bend on the B3134 road, the news provider said.

The warning sign, which was put up by north Somerset Council, is activated by vehicles approaching, and reads "slow down" when illuminated.

Local councillor Elfan Ap Rees told the news source he was shocked and concerned at the theft.

"It never ceases to amaze me what people will steal."

"This sign was put up for a specific reason and its removal could potentially put road users' safety in jeopardy. The sign would cost approximately Ã‚Â£7,000 to replace and in the current financial climate it is unlikely this kind of money will become available for a replacement, so we would be grateful for any information which leads to us getting the sign back."

Earlier this month a coastguard manager urged people to take heed of warning signs after a girl suffered a head injury during a coastal walk.
