Self-employed roofers fined over safety practices
16th June 2010 | Health and Safety Signs
Two roofers have been fined after failing to implement safety measures such as warning signs while working at height.
The self-employed men carried out work on a steel-framed building near Chippenham on March 18th 2009 without nets or edge protection, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has confirmed.
Anthony Sweet and Christopher Cole admitted to breaching Regulation 6(3) of the Work at Height Regulations 2005 at Chippenham Magistrates' Court and were both fined £200 and ordered to pay costs of £250.
"In this case, not only were the defendants putting themselves at risk but they were gaining an economic advantage over those who work safely," said HSE inspector Simon Chilcott.
"They should have ensured that they had planned the work properly, taking into account all the probable risks, and then managed the project correctly."
Sussex-based firm Flowserve was fined £150,000 recently after failing to conduct a risk assessment on a high-pressure valve which burst, killing one of its employees.
