Skip-hire firms targeted in HSE crackdown

Nearly one in four skip-hire and waste sites in Derbyshire were issued with enforcement notices after Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspectors conducted a programme of safety spot checks.
Of the 21 sites visited, five were found to be potentially putting their workers at risk of injury and, in the most serious cases, were forced to stop working immediately. Ten notices were issued in all – four at just one site.
The way vehicles were used on site – especially in the way of controls, such as warning signs, to keep people away from moving vehicles – was the main focus of concern.
In the waste and recycling industry, there is an accident rate around four times greater than the UK average.
"It is totally unacceptable that lives have been lost and continue to be put at risk on waste sites," said HSE inspector Edward Walker, who headed-up the spot checks.
"Our inspectors found that the majority of sites were operating safely, but the fact there were safety concerns on almost a quarter of the sites is just not good enough."
