The golden rules of your workplace
19th September 2014 | Health and Safety Signs
Whether you know it or not, every workplace has a set of 'golden rules' that must be observed. These are the habits everybody must observe to be safe at all times. Many of these will be in line with standard guidelines, such as turning off and isolating a machine before it is cleaned or repaired. However, many will be unique to your company.
It is often a good idea to set these down in writing, and hang them up in the same manner as other safety signs. That way the rules your workplace abide by become much more official, enabling you to keep everyone safe.
So, what sort of guidelines could you include on your golden rules? Here are a few possible examples.
Schedules/routines
When lots of different teams have to share the same space, things can get awkward. This is why many businesses organise a routine. For example, the cleaners might come in before the workers. In this case, one of your golden rules could be 'Wait until the cleaners have finished before starting work', which would reduce the number of slips and falls your staff suffer.
Who to go to if there is a problem
In larger businesses, there may be more than one health and safety officer working full-time, often, this means each officer takes responsibility for a different aspect of employee safety. If this is the case, your employees need to know who to go to in each specific emergency. Including this in your golden rules can save vital time in case of an emergency.
Going above and beyond
In some workplaces, general health and safety guidelines might not be enough. For example, if you make use of forklifts in a particularly small or cramped warehouse, you may want them to go even slower than guidelines state they should. Include this in your golden rules so that nobody forgets and ends up causing an accident.
