Unite requests better helicopter safety

Unite has begun a campaign for better safety around offshore flights, specifically those involving helicopters.

The union has revealed that 50.7 per cent of its members are not confident about the standards of helicopter safety.

Another 81 per cent say that their levels of confidence in offshore flight safety have dropped.

These concerns have largely come to the surface due to a helicopter crash on August 23rd. A Super Puma helicopter crashed into the ocean while transporting workers from the Borgsten Dolphin support vessel to Sumburgh Airport on Shetland.

As a result, Unite has launched the ‘Back Home Safe’ campaign, which aims to encourage Oil and Gas UK to take steps to improve workers’ confidence in offshore flight safety.

Willie Thomson, Unite organiser, said: “It was a very successful launch. It's been very well received by the offshore workforce and certainly they are standing behind Unite's demand that action needs to be taken to improve the safety of offshore flights.”ADNFCR-2754-ID-801661113-ADNFCR
