Thousands of useless street signs could be removed from Northampton's roads in a new move by the local council.

In the last few months, over 300 signs have been taken down throughout the county, with the authority proposing that 2,000 be detached in the forthcoming months, according to the Northampton Chronicle.

Speaking to the news provider, Northamptonshire County Council's cabinet member for the environment, councillor Ben Smith, said: "We must have hundreds of thousands of signs in Northamptonshire and we need to get to the stage where the number taken down is significant."

Mr Smith went on to say that the current progress represents only the start of the efforts and shows fantastic potential.

While signs are looking to be removed in Northamptonshire, Peterborough Today has reported that villagers are to see new safety notices on their streets.

Residents in Thorney Toll will see new safety signage on the busy A47 junction.ADNFCR-2754-ID-801360038-ADNFCR
