Wales fell-running event cancelled amid safety worries

One of Britain's most established fell-running events has been cancelled due to health and safety worries, despite warning signs being used.

The Machen Mountain race, which sees more than 200 runners travel across the A468 Newport road to Caerphilly road, has never led to any injuries, but it has still been cancelled, according to the Western Mail.

Dominic Shields, a runner from St Mellons, told the newspaper: "It's an over-reaction to the degree of risk – if this was repeated elsewhere it would kill off the sport.

"It should be possible to cover the legal risk by getting people to sign an entry form saying they are running at their own risk."

An article for the Flintshire Chronicle recently revealed that Deeside College has hosted a health and safety awards ceremony.

This was organised to commemorate the pass rate of its health and safety programme, which is significantly higher than the national average. ADNFCR-2754-ID-800695076-ADNFCR
