Warning signs for drinking while pregnant go up

Warning signs to alert women to the risks of drinking alcohol while they are pregnant will be put up at bars and restaurants in a US state.

Utah passed legislation for the move in July 2009, abc4.com reports.

A formal event was held when the first bar, Chili's in Salt Lake City, installed the warning signs last week.

Terra Daniel attended the event with her five-year-old adopted daughter Briar. Briar's birth mother drank while she was pregnant, causing the child permanent brain damage.

"It's hard because people will look at her and expect her to function like a five year old, and when she doesn't, they think she's just a bad kid or they think she's just a brat or she should be disciplined better or parented better and it's very frustrating," Ms Daniel told the news provider.

The law states that all 1,900 establishments where alcohol is served in Utah must put up warning signs by July this year.

In the UK, the Department of Health recommends that drinking is avoided for women who are pregnant.

Those who choose to drink are advised not to drink more than one to two units of alcohol once or twice a week.ADNFCR-2754-ID-800416583-ADNFCR
