Emergency Response Signs

Emergency response signs are a critical component in the framework of Martyn’s Law, as they help ensure that venues and events are properly equipped to respond to a potential terrorist attack. Under Martyn’s Law, which requires public venues with a capacity over 200 people to assess and mitigate the risk of terrorism, it’s not enough to simply have the necessary first aid supplies on hand; these supplies must also be easily accessible and identifiable in times of crisis.

In the event of an attack, particularly one involving mass casualties, time is of the essence. Traumatic injuries, such as catastrophic bleeding, can cause death within minutes if not addressed immediately. Emergency response signs serve as a fast and clear means of guiding people to vital medical supplies like trauma kits and bleed control stations. Without clear signage, victims and responders may waste precious time trying to locate the resources they need.

Additionally, these signs provide critical information, such as the location of supplies and who is in charge of the emergency response, ensuring a coordinated effort. By enhancing the visibility and accessibility of essential first aid resources, emergency response signs directly support the objectives of Martyn’s Law—namely, to minimize harm and maximize survival chances in the event of a terrorist attack.

The Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill is designed to increase preparedness for, and protection from, terrorist attacks at public venues.

The new legislation, also known as ‘Martyn’s Law’ in tribute of Martyn Hett who was killed alongside 21 others in the 2017 Manchester Arena attack, will make sure venues across the UK must consider the security of the public, and take steps to protect them from harm.
