Borough of Hackney bans smoking in Clissold Park

19th July 2011 | No Smoking Signs

Posted by Jason Nicholls

The Borough of Hackney is set to introduce a smoking ban at Clissold Park, which will duly result in the installation of many no smoking signs.

It decided on the measure because of worries over the health of children in the park. Also, if the pilot proves to be successful, the authority may elect to widen the band to include other play areas in its 62 parks, reports the London Evening Standard.

Speaking to the newspaper, Caroline Millar, chairwoman of Clissold Park User Group, said: "With so many children and families coming for fresh air and exercise, it is good to know the air really will be fresh and there will be no more cigarette butts in the sandpit."

London is not the only area where action against smoking is being taken, as the BBC has reported that no smoking signs have been erected at an outdoor play area in Cleethorpes.
