Candle Fire Safety Week launches as Christmas nears
20th November 2012 | Fire Signs
Posted by Jason Nicholls
With Christmas on the horizon and the dark nights drawing in, Candle Fire Safety Week is attempting to help households stay safe this winter.
Running between November 19th and 25th, the campaign will give advice to those who like to add a little bit of heat and a warm glow to their room.
However, according to statistics, over 40 per cent of fires started by candles result in death or injury, with more than 350 casualties every year.
Gary Phillips, deputy chief fire officer in Warwickshire, said: "To prevent candle fires from starting in the first place, make sure your candles are kept away from flammable materials like curtains and ensure they are put out when you leave the room, even for a moment."
He advised that every property should be fitted with a smoke alarm, which will warn households if there are problems before it is too late.
Property owners should make sure that they test the battery in their smoke alarm each week, with the potentially life-saving process only taking a couple of minutes.
