Fire safety concerns for new Suffolk performance venue

15th July 2010 | Fire Signs

The design of a new performance venue in Bury St Edmonds has resulted in concern among fire chiefs for the safety of the public when inside.

According to the East Anglian Daily Times, some 58 events have already been planned for The Apex, which is set to officially open later this year.

However, Kevin Burton, senior fire safety officer for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, is unsatisfied that the £18.5 million building meets sufficient safety standards.

He told the publication: "It is not an off-the-shelf building. As a result, the design has never been tested and it has never been tried.

"They've not yet satisfied us that the management of fire safety is up to scratch. They are also yet to formulate a document to show us they understand the complexity of the building (in fire safety terms)."

One step that could be taken is to ensure that fire safety signs are present to inform guests of any points of exit or where emergency equipment can be located, alongside being told how to use them.
