'Improved signage' helping to end mixed-gender hospital accommodation

Improved health and safety signage is working to eradicate mixed-sex accommodation at a hospital in Hampshire.
According to the Hampshire Chronicle, the Winchester and Eastleigh Healthcare NHS Trust (WEHT) received £232,000 in the 2009-10 financial year, to improve mixed-sex accommodation at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital.
New and improved door signs for all bathrooms, new curtains, and a project manager responsible for the changes were all employed.
A spokesperson for the trust said that now only one of its average 391 patients experiences mixed-sex accommodation on a typical day.
Maggie Oldham, chief operating officer at WEHT, told the newspaper: "Over the last year we have made tremendous steps forward in this area, not just in practical terms, such as new bathroom facilities, but also in our own tolerance and attitude to mixed-sex accommodation."
However, a survey undertaken at the hospital has shown that 100 people said they slept in mixed-sex accommodation during the first quarter of 2010.
Health secretary Andrew Lansley has said that mixed-sex wards will be abolished by the end of the year.
