This sign warns people not to use the Lift in the event of a fire.
Why shouldn’t you use a lift in the case of fire?
There are three key reasons:
1) In the event of a fire the power is likely to fail or to be switched off by the fire department, leaving you trapped.
2) Lift Shafts can act like chimneys as smoke and hot air rises.
3) Elevators are not smoke proof, you are now trapped in a metal box, that won’t move that is filling up with smoke.
This warning sign can be used in conjunction with Fire Action notices. These sign give a more general overview of what you should do in the event of a fire and can be used in corridors and in rooms to re-enforce the message that visitors shouldn’t use a lift if there is a fire evacuation.

Why it is important to place these signs near lift entrances?
If you mention not to use lifts on your Fire Action notices, why bother with additional notices by the lifts? Building evacuations are now planned using software that simulates how people behave in a real fire. People will tend to try and exit using the same route they used to enter the building (source). It is familiar and easily brought to mind. However in a tall building it is very likely this route was a lift. When people are potentially panicking or just disoriented it is important to remind them not to take the lift and to show alternative exits.
It might also make sense to pair this sign with a Fire Exit arrow sign, so that when people are reminded that they cannot use the lift as an exit they are shown a safe route out of the building.
