What sort of risk does this safety sign protect against?
In areas with a low ceiling clearance these signs can warn people of the need to duck under an obstacle.
Ideally you should always remove a risk rather than warn about it if you can. Consider offering a different route that avoids the low clearance or adjusting / removing the obstacle.
Sometimes this simply isn’t possible. For example older buildings often have corridors and ceiling heights that are lower than would be considered appropriate in a modern building.
During building works it is sometimes impossible to avoid temporarily causing an obstruction at head height.
What heights do you need to mark with a caution 'Mind your head' sign?
The average heights for men in the UK varies from 175.3 cm (5ft 9in) in England to 178.2 cm (5ft 10in) in Scotland. But there are still a large proportion of a men above this height. The tallest man in Europe lives in England, at 7ft 7in, there aren’t many doorways that he would fit under without ducking. A relatively small number of men in the UK are over 6ft 6inches tall and the standard door height in the UK is 6ft 6in. Anything over this height should be fine without the need to place a safety sign. However be particularly careful where an obstacle is above a slope or steps as you may need to measure from the step above instead of the height directly below the obstacle.
Where should you mount this sign?
Ideally these signs should be mounted at eye height or directly onto the obstacle facing in the direction of travel. You need to think, if someone were walking towards this risk , will they be able to see the sign and stop or duck in time to avoid banging their head.
What fixing methods are available for this sign?
The self adhesive vinyl versions of this sign be stuck directly to flat, dry clean surfaces.
The 3mm, stainless steel or aluminium composite versions of the sign can be screwed directly onto a surface. The 3mm version can be suspended using a sign hanger to hang in-front of an obstacle.
If this sign is to be used in areas where lights may have been temporarily switched off, we would recommend using a photoluminescent material which will glow in the dark for a short period of time after lights out.
